Lessons of 9/11; Sins of the Father

Saturday, September 10th's coverage of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 had a weird comment from NPR's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED that 9/11 marked a generational conflict.  It's true for the wrong reasons; this all started with Bush #41's illicit basing of American soldiers in Saudi Arabia during and after Operation Desert Shield/Storm.  It is Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz and others who did not see combat in Vietnam trying to show actual veterans of that undeclared war and of WWII how to run a neoconservative war without enough troops/equipment/cause while threatening to fire any general who sought post-war planning like the Marshall Plan did.

If you are not going to any 9/11 events, I suggest these movies:

  1. Charlie Wilson's War (with Tom Hanks as the Congressman who helped free Afghanistan)
  2. Rambo III (Afghan rebels fight off the Soviet Union) and maybe all Rambo movies, about vets etc.
  3. Flight 93 (the one considered by the Oscars, not the knockoff)
  4. Jarhead (about an infantryman in the 1991 Persian Gulf War)
  5. Recount (Kevin Spacey as Al Gore's lawyer and Laura Dern as Katherine Harris; 2000 election theft)
  6. The Path to 9/11 (despite Harvey Keitel, a complete fiction); Wag the Dog for GOP's view of Clinton
  7. W. (scarily accurate about Bush #43)
  8. Silver City (a more fictionalized movie about Bush #43)
  9. Fair Game (the recent one about ex-diplomat Joe Wilson and exposed spy Valerie Plame-Wilson)
  10. An Inconvenient Truth (with Al Gore, who won the Presidential election) 11th Hour, The Corporation

Remember:  9/11 = oil.  The real tie between Iraq and Osama was that Osama wanted to defend Saudi Arabia from Iraq rather than have American troops there.  The real weapon of mass destruction by Saddam Hussein was his cheap oil once the murderous oil embargo ended, probably ending the dollar's supremacy in valuing oil.  William Krystol should be in jail for fraud for telling everyone that Iraq had no history of sectarian violence, forgetting Saddam's power requiring that the minority Sunni suppress the majority Shiites, not to mention Saddam's slaughter of Shiites who tried to overthrow him after Bush #41's vague promise to help despite a treaty letting Saddam fly military helicopters.

Between Bush #43's selection by The Supreme Court and 9/11, sure we had the Gary Condit / Chandra Levy scandal, but also the April 1st crash of a Chinese military pilot and Americans held prisoner before their plane was chopped then returned, America's withdrawal from the International Court, and the U.S. refusal to sign the Kyoto Accords despite action by individual states and cities.  I call today Four Planes' Day, not Patriot Day.  Read Anthony Cordesman's The Buffy Paradigm and visit www.9-11commission.gov to read the official report,, flaws and all.  Peace out.

P.S. also see the movies STAR TREK, the remake where actions and vengeance affect other generations in strange ways, and all three SPIDER-MAN movies by Sam Raimi where average New Yorkers help the exhausted hero in #1 & #2; #3 has the hero nearly becomes the villain.

Sorry, NPR: the best music for 9/11 includes Superman (It's Not Easy) by Five for Fighting and Time by Enya. We Are The Champions by Queen?

Lessons of 9/11: Sins of the Father

Many recollections of Tuesday, September 11, 2001 are just that, memories of a day and the events that followed, including Operation Infinite Justice in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL), an unfortunately titled crusade quickly renamed Operation Iraqi Freedom.  It became a way to settle unfinished business with Iraq's Saddam Hussein, who did have one Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD):  cheap oil ready to unleash after a decade of embargo and food-for-oil after the Persian Gulf War's Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  In 1990, the President George H. W. Bush (#41) Administration told diplomat April Glassby to relay a message to Saddam Husseini; his dispute with Kuwait was not a U.S. concern.  This became Saddam's excuse to invade Kuwait, which gave Bush an excuse to get Saudi Arabia to accept American troops on its soil; movie director Spike Lee had a hard enough time getting non-Moslem Americans on Arabian territory to make MALCOLM X, but this would trigger Osama bin Laden's wrath.  So far, Osama's plan worked:  force America to spend itself into oblivion just as the Soviet Union did in the late 80's, while inflating oil prices by having Christian crusaders and Islamic jihadists fight over oil fields and pipelines.  There are many lessons to be learned about 9/11:  visit www.9-11commission.gov for the valid-if-flawed Commission Report, and read then-Senator Bob Graham's (FL-D) book INTELLIGENCE MATTERS.  Watch movies like FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR and maybe RAMBO III as a reminder of what can happen when an unwanted superpower sends troops to a guerrilla's playground.  The movie W. is sympathetic, but brutal in its comparisons between the two wars on Iraq by different Bush presidencies.  Television shows like THE PATH TO 9/11 and W.'s remembrances of 9/11 are forgettable except to track right-wing delusions.  Young Winston Churchill switched the British Navy from coal to oil; today's soldiers are switching from one-use batteries to rechargeables with solar panels.  Also, look for Anthony Cordesman's post-9/11 essay THE BUFFY PARADIGM which analogizes terrorists to various supernatural villains.
Testing my options.

Responding to NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORTS commentators

www.ustream.tv/recorded/16850277
I mentioned David Kay Johnston's estimate that 1/3 Americans earn under $16,000/year because it would be good stimulus to give each of them $12,000/year either monthly or lump sum tax-free.  $1,200,000,000,000 ($1.2T) sounds like a lot, so let the Federal Reserve handle it since they have no problem loaning $9T without explanation.  Let the money come with some Personal Finance 101 information so most of it does not go to lotteries, casinos, or shop-at-home products.  At least the poor and working poor will not hoard it like banks in the 1920's or gamble it like in the 80's and the 2000's.  I will talk later about how the two Bushes' wars in Iraq bookend 9/11 in the worst way.  www.9-11commission.gov

#OperationStolenEarth

Let's make August 3rd, President Obama's 50th birthday, the start of #OperationStolenEarth to undermine big corporations & other billionaires.  Since they rely on the sale of raw materials, let's invest in products that reduce the demand, like attic insulation and rechargeable.  Let the 22.7% (SGS) un- and under-employed grow victory gardens if they cannot afford organic food.

Obama Signs Bill To Extend Bush Tax Cuts = $858B tax bill cut for two years

President Obama is racing to stop the August 2nd debt ceiling countdown because he refused to take jobless benefits from two million Americans in 2010.  Unfortunately, that was a mistake, causing most of the country to suffer and disrupting the bond market.  The right move would have returned the top marginal income tax from 35% to 39% like under President Clinton, a move www.thomhartmann.com say would have erased the national debt in about ten years.  Hours ago, I adapted a countdown widget on this Web log (blog) to match that by http://abcnews.go.com/wn tracking the composite stupidity/nihilism of Representatives Eric Cantor & Paul Ryan.  Government IS like a corporation, a nonprofit corporation that needs to maximize income and to catalyze output while paying its employees and contractors.  Obama needs to bypass these Mammon-worshipers and talk with their corporate masters about what happens if America has even another mini-default like in 1979.  See the current unemployment numbers at www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t15.htm and the unofficial-yet-scary www.shadowstats.com; U-3 = 9.2%, U-3 = 16.2%, SGS = 22.7% with the later two up 0.4% thanks mostly to public job layoffs by Tea Party governors & the end of federal stimulus money.

What Obama Will Never Say

  1. We will fight against corporate taxes; if corporations don't employ or serve us, we don't pay them!
  2. Corporations are legally people; let them shut down for underpaid jury duty & pay 91% for earnings over $1B to help with our $14T debt and our $3T wars.
  3. We support our troops; let's get them home by Christmas.
  4. Let's start a counterinsurgency at home, overwhelming our real enemies with superior numbers not just the best technology we can import from China.  That means erasing ignorance with well-paid union teachers and assistants and librarians.  That includes healing the sick and infirm with doctors and nurses and chiropractors who concentrate on their art and not on their college loans.  This means training them in the U.S.A.; Uncle Sam can cover medical costs for 5% overhead instead of the private sector's 25%.
  5. We can clear the streets of the homeless not with the same police actions that cities do before their Super Bowl games but by treating our most vulnerable military veterans for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury and other sufferings.  That lets us help the others with counseling and food stamps and subsidized housing; this small cost is nothing compared to the injustice of our neighbors being poor and helpless in the midst of the world's wealthiest nation.

Saving America in Ten Steps by 1/1/2017

  1. End all subsidies of oil and coal, offering single-payer solar panels to homes for residents if not owners.
  2. Raise the hourly minimum wage from $7.25 in 2011 to $10 by 2014 (1968 level) to $15 by 2017.
  3. Outlaw private money to finance elections, giving $1/voter/election, whether primary or runoff or general.
  4. Put cigarette-style warning labels on foods with high fructose syrup or aspartame, both known poisons.
  5. Erase the $106.800 annual income cap taxable by Social Security, letting billionaires pay.
  6. Every February, offer free monthly passes for mass transit; cost efficiency is addictive.
  7. Raise the top marginal income tax rates (including capital gains):  35% = $¼M+, 39% = $½M+, 50% = $1M+, 74% = $20M+, 91% = $1B+.
  8. Provide single-payer education and healthcare, in exchange for 2 years military or 3 years other service.
  9. Erase NAFTA & GATT to allow Mexico and Haiti to grow their own food and jobs.
  10. Give $250/week or $13,000/year tax-free to all who served in Iraq or Afghanistan (not O-5 and up.)

America's Punic War

The three Punic Wars between Rome and Carthage lasted from 246 to 146 B.C.E., named for the Phoenician sea-going culture in contrast to the Latin land-bound one.  Among the lesser-known consequences is that during each war, especially the famous Second Punic War from 218 to 201 B.C.E. that included the strategies of Hannibal of Carthage and Scipio Africanus of Rome, citizen-soldiers left their farms to fight for their Republic   only to find them worthless upon their return, forcing the sale of family farms to large latifundias or losing domestic production to cheap imports.  Does this sound familiar?  American soldiers are returning to the civilian workplace, either with ten years of service only to be told they are over-qualified for the McJobs they need, or with medic skills but lacking certification or coursework to become a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and without the living expenses stipend to use their G. I. Bill for school.

The unnecessary wars of Afghanistan and Iraq, avoidable if an elected President had allowed Osama bin Laden to be tried in the World Court or equivalent, have created what TIME magazine called the Decade of Hell and a lost generation.  At least the Romans won land and slaves; we fought both to prevent Saddam Hussein from flooding the market with cheap post-embargo oil and to control the Caspian Sea pipeline.  It's like watching the old DALLAS soap opera story arch when gasoline was cheap, so while Patrick Duffy's Bobby Ewing was lobbying for a legal price floor on oil, Larry Hagman's J.R. Ewing was funding mercenaries to stir up Middle East mayhem to boost the oil market.  At least J.R. suffered for his crimes; how have the Bushes or the Cheneys or the Rumsfelds been punished, with book deals and speaking tours? Let's send them free vacation packages to Germany and see what happens; they know about war criminals.

Try this for stimulus; every U.S. service member who saw duty in Iraq or Afghanistan since 9/11 gets a $250/week tax-free stipend as a $13,000 gift from America in accordance with IRS laws, while keeping existing benefits.  Combine this with a $1/year rise in the minimum wage to reach its $10 1968-equivalent then its $15 productivity-equivalent and we can counter the current top-heavy inflation of CEO income and real estate bubbles.  Finally make the following free and Sean Hannity's nightmare will become true:  education, healthcare, and mass transit.  Bring back 1986 Reagan-style amnesty to 12M+ undocumented workers so they can unionize and erase its underground economy while exposing convicted felons for deportation.  Legalize naturally occurring drugs as GRAS (generally regarded as safe) as if they were tobacco or alcohol and the drug war stops its death count.  It's like Canadian Leonard Cohen sings, ""Democracy is coming to the U.S.A."

So It Begins

This blog is designed to interface with Twitter and uStream.

I still hope to broadcast on micro-radio; South Florida has to rely on smartphones to stream www.green960.com and www.radiofreejax.com.

I don't expect to make much money from this, not like movie critic Roger Ebert did from Twitter and Amazon.
